At this event in November 2008 we investigated three periods of monetary instability - the end of Bretton Woods in 1968, attempts at stabilistation between 1985 - 1987 via the Plaza Accord and Louvre and the 1976 Sterling Crisis. A key discussion with Paul Volcker, chairman of the Federal Reserve between 1979 - 1987, who witnessed each of these eras, examined whether there were any lessons to be learnt from these past events to guide us through the current financial turbulence.
Our speakers featured key British and international economic figures with unique insight into the events that have led to the recent global credit crisis.

On this occasion Paul Volcker gave a frank interview in which he offered his thoughts on the causes of the financial crisis, the culpability of elements of the banking system, and suggested ways in which banking activity should be regulated. These thoughts have now found legislative expression, and global attention, as the ‘Volcker Rule’.
